September is self-improvement month, so to kick off our blog we’re bringing you 10 ways that you can participate and make your life a little more awesome. Whether you make one or all of these things a part of your life, they’re bound to lead to some self-improvement!
1) HIT THE GYM
I know, I know- this piece of advice probably has you rolling your eyes because it’s so cliché, and I don’t blame you. However, exercise is important to your health and the average American doesn’t get nearly enough. Exercise can help you control your weight, keep your joints mobile, and can help prolong your life. According to the CDC people who are physically active for about 7 hours a week have a 40% lower chance of dying early than people who are physically active for less than 30 minutes a week. You don’t necessarily have to join a gym to get the benefits of exercise- walking, jogging, and home exercise routines are just as effective.
2) LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE
With modern technology growing more every day our world seems like it’s getting smaller and smaller. Why not try to bridge some of the communication gap by learning a new language? Learning a new language can help make you look more desirable to employers, communicate with new people, or immerse yourself in a new culture. One of our favorite ways to learn is with Duolingo– their free site and app are easy to navigate and make learning fun!
3) SPEND TIME AWAY FROM TECHNOLOGY
Today technology is improving by leaps and bounds, making our everyday lives easier and more organized. However, along with progress comes some setbacks, such as the growing problem with people spending TOO much time with their smart devices. Consider stepping away from technology for a few hours every day and enjoy the world around you- grab some friends and do something fun like hiking, bowling, or going to the park!
While you’re getting away from technology for a bit, consider volunteering! Not only does it make you feel awesome to do something for your community, but it makes your community a more amazing place to live for you and your neighbors. You don’t have to volunteer with an organization to make a difference either- you can offer to help an elderly neighbor, pick up litter in your neighborhood, or begin a collection effort for your local food bank. Or, if solo volunteering doesn’t sound enjoyable to you, consider joining forces with your neighbors and starting a Neighborhood Watch program (you can find tips for starting your own Watch here). The ways you can help are only limited by your imagination!
5) CLEAN OUT EXTRA CLUTTER
Just because it’s September doesn’t mean that you can’t do some spring cleaning! Clearing out clutter around the house can help you feel more organized and make your living space more comfortable. Try starting with closets: hang clothes with the hangers backwards, and once you wear the clothes hang them back up normally. After a few months take a look at your closet- if you find clothes on the backwards hangers that you have no plans on wearing anytime soon consider donating them.
One of the best things that you can do for yourself is to make some time to step away from your busy day and just relax. Setting a specific time to focus on yourself, even if it’s just a few minutes, can help you feel rejuvenated and focused. Try setting aside 15 minutes of your day to simply enjoy a cup of tea or your favorite music- try this for a week and you might be surprised to find it’s your favorite daily ritual!
7) TRY DANCING
Try dancing! It’s a great activity that can be enjoyed in some form by almost everyone young and old, and depending on the style of dancing you’d like to try it can be done with a friend, a group of friends, or even alone. Consider taking a class at your local dance studio, community college, or recreation center!
8) READ A BOOK
Reading can take you to new places and introduce you to new people that you would have never imagined possible! Whether you choose fantasy, historical, or other forms of literature you’ve chosen to open your mind to an amazing adventure. Every book you read has the potential to help you learn a new skill or way of thinking that could make your life more amazing, you just have to take the first step!
9) LEARN TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT
While you may never become a famous musician, being able to play in instrument is still a great skill to have. Playing music is a great way to relax and engage your brain at the same time, and being able to create beautiful music is extremely satisfying. Check out local music shops or community colleges for classes or instruments for sale and bring more music into your life!
10) RECONNECT WITH OLD FRIENDS OR FAMILY
Have you lost contact with a good friend or family member? A great way to improve your life is to reconnect with those from your past that you’ve lost contact with- and thanks to modern technology it’s never been easier! Simply head to a background check website like Advanced Background Checks, enter information such as their name and the last city/state that you remember them living in, and let the reconnecting begin!
